Thumb pain

Common at this spot

Ordered by how common, not by search volume.

  1. Thumb base (CMC) osteoarthritis

The base of the thumb hurts when opening a lid or pinching

    Why it happens

The cartilage that protects the ends of the bones wears down, and the joint becomes painful and stiff — here, the joint at the base of the thumb. It is more common after a joint injury or heavy use, if you are overweight, with age, and if it runs in the family.

    How it feels

    • A painful, stiff joint
    • Trouble moving it
    • Swelling and tenderness
    • A grating or crackling sound when you move

    When to see a doctor

See a doctor if the symptoms persist.

How bad it gets varies a lot from person to person — from mild to making everyday life hard.

  2. Intersection syndrome

The upper wrist swells and creaks when you move it

  3. Thumb sprain

The thumb hurts and feels weak when spread or gripping

    Get help right away if

Call emergency services or go to A&E if you heard a crack when it happened, if the injured part has changed shape, if it has turned blue or grey, or if it feels numb.

    Why it happens

Something has been overstretched or torn — here, the ligaments of the thumb. It happens when you overstretch or twist, and more easily if you did not warm up or it was already tired.

    How it feels

    • Pain, tenderness, or weakness
    • Swelling or bruising
    • Muscle cramping or spasms
    • You cannot put weight on it or use it normally

    How long it usually lasts

Most feel better after about 2 weeks. Avoid heavy exercise such as running for up to 8 weeks.

    When to see a doctor

Get advice if severe pain is getting worse, if swelling or bruising is bad or worsening, if you cannot put weight on it or move it, or if you have a high temperature or feel shivery (that can mean infection).

  4. Skier's thumb (UCL injury)

The thumb feels loose outward and grip strength drops

  5. Extensor pollicis longus rupture

You can no longer lift the thumb on your own
